Step 1: Remove the Pockets
All standard pool tables have a total of six pockets, four corner pockets, and two side pockets. These pockets can be attached to the pool table in a few different ways, depending on the manufacturer. The most common method is to connect the pockets with staples on the underside. Ideally, you should use a staple puller for this task. However, if you do not have one, gently work the staples out with a flathead screwdriver.
Step 2: Detach the Rails
Now that the pockets have been removed, you can start detaching the rails. As with the pockets, there are a few different method manufacturers use. The most common method is bolting the rails to the table. Use a socket wrench to disconnect the rails, which can then be carefully slid out.
Step 3: Remove the Felt
Removing the pool table requires a lot of attention and care. With improper handling, the felt can tear, which will damage the felt permanently. The felt should be stapled to the slate beneath with staples around the side edges. Gently remove the staples with a staple puller and neatly fold the felt to avoid damage.
Step 4: Separate the Slate from the Table
Pool table slate is very heavy and you will require assistance for this section of the process. Generally, the slate is screwed into the pool table’s frame and can be unscrewed using a screwdriver or power drill. Just be careful not to damage the surface.
Step 5: Wrap Slate In Moving Blanket
Before removing the slate from the table, first lay a large moving blanket on the floor. With your helpers, lift the slate from the frame of the pool table and gently place it on the center of the blanket. Make sure that the blanket is large enough to fully cover your slate. If not, use a second blanket and tape both sides securely together.
Step 6: Remove the Legs
Pool table legs are generally screwed on to the bottom of the pool table’s frame and can be removed quite easily with a power drill or screwdriver. Ask your helpers to hold the weight of the frame as you remove the legs to prevent it from falling. Once all of the legs are removed, place them and the frame on the floor.
Step 7: Wrap Frame in Moving Blanket
Before loading everything into your moving vehicle, wrap the pool table frame in a moving blanket to prevent damage. The same can be done for each of the legs. Make sure the blankets are secured with tape.
Step 8: Load Slate, Frame and, Legs into Moving Vehicle
Now that the slate, frame, and legs are wrapped and ready for moving, it is time to begin loading them into the moving vehicle. Firstly, load the slate into the moving vehicle; ensuring that it is placed on a completely flat surface. Next, load the frame of the pool table on top of the slate, placing it down as gently as possible to avoid damaging the slate. Finally, place the legs on top or to the side of the frame.
